When she and then-husband Burt Bacharach wrote "That's What Friends Are For" (1982), Carole had written the lyrics: "I never thought I'd feel this way . . . ," but when Burt was adding the melody, he insisted that "And" be added to the very beginning, a decision that irked her for some time until she ultimately agreed that this better suited the overall meter of the intro.

One of her earliest compositions - "A Groovy Kind of Love" (penned with Toni Wine) - was first popularized in 1966 by British beat group Wayne Fontana & The Mindbenders, and in 1988 by Phil Collins from the soundtrack of his feature film debut Buster (1988). Both versions made the top 10 list on the US and UK charts at the time their releases.

First bi-coastal hit song (written with Toni Wine) was "A Groovy Kind of Love" released by The Mindbenders in 1965. The song topped the charts again in 1988 when released by Phil Collins, winning him a Grammy Award nomination for Best Pop Vocal Performance, Male.
